How Much is the "Perfect" Amount of Water?

Water is an essential necessity when it comes to taking care of and maintaining your body and keeping healthy. However, the ideal amount of water needed to take on the day can often be vague or confusing to determine.

How Much Water Do You Need?

When it comes to the ideal amount of water one should drink in a day, experts state that this amount should be anywhere from a half an ounce and one once of water per pound that you weigh. For instance, a 180 pound person would have to drink 90-180 ounces of water per day to maintain sufficient hydration levels.

Studies from the National Academies of Sciences also suggest that women should intake around 2.7 liters (91 ounces) of water per day, while men should drink around 3.7 (125 ounces) of water per day. These studies, compiled with statements by experts, prove that the amount of water one should drink a day is hard to determine, but is stated to be around the 90+ ounces mark.

Truthfully, the amount of water needed to stay fully hydrated changes from person to person as everyone is unique in the ways that their body functions. A person, for instance, who works in a job with moderate to high physical activity will need more water, than say, someone working an office job with lower physical activity.

Why Does Your Body Need Water?

Besides the obvious answer of staying hydrated, why does your body need and require so much water? Well, the human body needs and uses water to maintain its temperature, remove waste and toxins, as well as to lubricate your joints. Without enough water, our body wouldn't be able to function to its maximum potential.

The Mayo Clinic Health System describes how water also has the benefits of moistening tissues in the eyes, nose, and mount, as well as protecting body organs and tissues. They state how water lessens burdens on our kidneys and liver by flushing out waste products and dissolving minerals and nutrients.
